Italy vs Ireland - Preview

This will be the shortest of the three previews ahead of this weekend, it's certain, Ireland are going to run out victors, and by quite some way. The form they are in after victories against Australia and South Africa can not be matched by Italy and as reigning 6 Nations champions they will be full of confidence, even away to the Azzurri. I will look at the key man for each side and discuss their strengths and potential impact on the match.

Paul O'Connell
I'm going to plump for the big Irish talisman as the key man this weekend for Ireland. He is essential as always, galvanising the team with his leadership. The 2009 Lions captain has 96 caps for Ireland, and will break the 100 cap mark this tournament. His tackling and defence are one of the reasons he is one of the best second rows in world rugby, and whilst not being the best ball carrier in his team, the way he organises his squad especially at set pieces is pivotal. The outrageous work-rate of the 35 year old and the influence he carries not only with his team-mates but also with officials pays off in every, single game, no matter the score line. That is why he will continue to shine against Italy, he will treat it as he does every other game, the consummate professional will once again be the momentous monster he always is.

Michele Campagnaro
For Italy, we've gone for one of the stars of their 6 Nations campaign last year, with 2 tries against Wales, Michele Campagnaro. The Treviso centre only has 12 caps, but on his debut for the Italian club side he earned man of the match against Connacht, in May 2013. He has looked impressive, and whilst Sergio Parisse will undoubtedly be playing his usual role of carrying most of the team over the line, if Italy are to stand any chance then Michele will have to work his 6 Nations magic and work his way over that try line. The 21 year old still has a lot to prove, and maybe he can do it at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.

Prediction: Ireland over 25
